Designed for first-time builders

You don't need previous amplifier-building experience to assemble Crack. The kit includes the electronic components, tubes, chassis, wood base, and detailed step-by-step assembly manual. Start with Crack, modify with Speedball

Crack is a complete amplifier on its own, while the optional Speedball mod uses active constant-current sources to improve performance. Many builders purchase both kits together and install Speedball after completing the stock build and listening to it for a while.

At its core, the Crack uses a Bottlehead PT-10 universal power transformer and a proven C-R-C-R-C power supply layout originally made famous in the Foreplay preamp. This configuration—featuring ultrafast rectifiers and generous filtering—delivers a quiet, stable power source with ample headroom. The signal path is equally elegant: a 12AU7 dual triode directly drives a 6080 tube configured as a cathode follower, creating a clean, dynamic sound free of output transformers.

Is Bottlehead Crack Right for Your Headphones?

Bottlehead Crack 1.1 is an output-transformerless (OTL) tube headphone amplifier designed for high-impedance dynamic headphones.

Its single-ended circuit uses a 12AU7 input tube and a 6080 output tube configured as a cathode follower. The OTL design eliminates the output transformer, making headphone impedance an important consideration when choosing this amplifier.

Headphone Compatibility

Recommended: High-impedance dynamic headphones, particularly models with impedances of 200 ohms or higher. Popular examples include the Sennheiser HD600, HD650, and HD6XX.

Generally not recommended: Most low-impedance dynamic and planar-magnetic headphones. Crack's relatively high output impedance can affect frequency response and damping with these loads.

If you use lower-impedance headphones, consider the SEX 4 or Mainline instead.

Crack and the Speedball Mod

Crack is a complete headphone amplifier without Speedball. The optional Speedball mod uses active constant-current sources to improve circuit performance.

Many builders purchase both kits together. We recommend completing and testing the stock Crack before installing Speedball. This simplifies troubleshooting and gives you an opportunity to experience the stock circuit first.

Most builders can assemble and install the Speedball in an evening, but you can prolong the fun by installing half of the upgrade first, then listening to the difference, and then adding the rest of the upgrade a little later. Don't worry: all of this is outlined in our detailed manual.

Which tubes should I use?

We include a set of tubes with every kit so you're ready to play music as soon as you've passed your voltage checks.

We love it when you roll your own, too. You could use not only 6AS7s and 6080s, but also 5998s, 421As, 7236s, and maybe some others for the output stage, and the input tube could be changed to some other dual triodes like 6922 or 6CG7 with a little care taken to do the proper tube socket wiring for the heater pins - ask around in the forums for some help.

Can I put an output transformer on it and use it with speakers?

Crack is designed to drive high-impedance headphones, not loudspeakers. Adding an output transformer wouldn't turn it into a suitable speaker amplifier. For speakers, consider one of our integrated amplifier kits, such as the SEX 4.

Can you make me a custom version with multiple inputs, a selector switch and a stepped attenuator?

Crack is designed as a simple, single-input headphone amplifier. If you'd like a more fully featured OTL headphone amplifier, take a look at our Crackatwoa, which offers additional features. We don't offer custom-built versions of Crack with extra inputs or controls.
